AI Writing % (AI Writing Score)
The AI Writing % is a 0–100 indicator of how much of your text exhibits template-like phrasing patterns commonly associated with AI-generated content. It is not a probability of AI authorship — it measures the density of known AI writing patterns in your text.
- 0–33%: Human-like — few or no template patterns detected
- 34–66%: Mixed — some template patterns present, review flagged sentences
- 67–100%: AI-like — dense template patterns, strong recommendation to humanize
- The score is a revision guide, not an authorship verdict
Readability
Readability measures how easy your text is to read and understand. Naturalmelo evaluates sentence length variation, word complexity, and paragraph structure to produce a High, Good, or Fair rating on humanized output.
While AI Writing % measures how templated your text sounds, readability measures how easy it is for a human to read — a text can have a low AI Writing % but poor readability (awkward sentences), or a high AI Writing % with excellent readability (smooth but templated prose).
- High: varied sentence length, natural word choice, well-structured paragraphs
- Good: mostly readable with a few dense or repetitive sections
- Fair: monotonous rhythm, complex word clusters, or very short/long sentence runs
- Target: High for final drafts, Good is acceptable for quick shares
Coherence
Coherence measures how well your ideas flow from one sentence to the next. It evaluates logical progression, transitional phrasing, and whether each sentence builds on the previous one — rather than jumping between unrelated ideas.
- High: clear logical flow, smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs
- Good: mostly coherent with occasional abrupt shifts
- Fair: ideas feel disconnected, frequent topic jumps without bridging transitions
- AI-generated text often scores Good on coherence because templates create surface-level flow — human writing with original ideas can score Fair if transitions are weak
Sentence Variety
Sentence variety measures the diversity of sentence structures, lengths, and openings in your text. Low variety — many sentences of similar length starting with the same words — is a common AI writing pattern that Naturalmelo flags.
While coherence measures how ideas connect across sentences, sentence variety measures how different those sentences are from each other — AI text often has high coherence (smooth transitions) but low variety (monotonous rhythm), while human text typically has both or trades one for the other.
- High: mix of short and long sentences, varied openings, diverse structures
- Good: some variety but noticeable patterns (e.g., many sentences start with "The" or "This")
- Fair: monotonous sentence length and structure, repetitive sentence openings

Flagged Sentence Counts
Beyond the overall AI Writing %, Naturalmelo breaks down your text into three categories at the sentence level: Human-like, Mixed, and AI-like. These counts tell you exactly how many sentences need attention and at what severity level.
- Human-like count: sentences with no detected template patterns — no action needed
- Mixed count: sentences with some template indicators — review and optionally humanize
- AI-like count: sentences with strong template signals — strongly recommended to humanize
- Target: zero AI-like, minimal Mixed, majority Human-like
Quality Tiers: What High, Good, and Fair Mean
Naturalmelo uses three quality tiers — High, Good, and Fair — across readability, coherence, and sentence variety on humanized output. These tiers are relative benchmarks, not absolute scores, designed to help you compare before/after quality when humanizing text.
- High: top ~25% of output — ready for submission or publication
- Good: middle ~50% — usable as-is, minor improvements optional
- Fair: bottom ~25% — additional humanizing or manual editing recommended
- Always compare tiers on the same text before and after humanizing to see improvement direction

Common questions about AI writing quality metrics.
Is a low AI Writing % the same as "human-written"?
No. A low AI Writing % means fewer template-like phrasing patterns were detected — it does not prove human authorship. A skilled human writer could produce text with a high AI Writing % (if it happens to match template patterns), and highly humanized AI text can score low. The score measures patterns, not provenance.
Which metric matters most — AI Writing %, readability, or coherence?
For academic or formal writing where AI detection is a concern, prioritize AI Writing % first, then readability, then coherence. For casual writing where natural flow matters more, prioritize readability and sentence variety — a text can have a moderate AI Writing % but still read well.
Why does my humanized text have Good readability but Fair coherence?
Humanizing improves sentence-level phrasing (readability) but may not always fix paragraph-level idea flow (coherence). If your original text had weak logical progression, humanizing will make individual sentences smoother but won't reorganize your arguments. Fix coherence by restructuring paragraphs manually.
Can I use these metrics to compare different AI writing tools?
These metrics are specific to Naturalmelo's analysis framework and are not standardized across tools. Use them to track your own before/after improvement within Naturalmelo — not to compare scores across different platforms, which use different scoring models.
